How Atlanta Became the Heart of the Resistance

June 25, 2026  ·  Apparel With Purpose ATL

There are cities that talk about resistance. And then there's Atlanta — a city that was literally built on it.

We are not new to this. Atlanta didn't just show up for democracy when it became trendy. We've been here. From Ebenezer Baptist to the State Capitol steps. From John Lewis crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge to Stacey Abrams organizing in church basements. From the Sweet Auburn district to the Stop Cop City forest defense.

Atlanta is not just participating in the resistance. Atlanta is the resistance. And always has been.

The City Too Busy to Hate

In the 1960s, while much of the South was burning with resistance to civil rights, Atlanta chose a different path. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born here. He preached his first sermons at Ebenezer Baptist Church on Auburn Avenue. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) was founded here. The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organized out of Atlanta offices, sending young people into the most dangerous parts of the Jim Crow South to register Black voters.

John Lewis — Congressman, civil rights icon, the conscience of the Congress — was an Atlanta man. He represented Georgia's 5th District for over 30 years, and he never let the city forget where we came from or what we still owed.

2020: When Atlanta Delivered Georgia

In 2020, the country watched something that hadn't happened in 28 years: Georgia turned blue. It wasn't a fluke.

For nearly a decade before that moment, Stacey Abrams and the organizations she built — Fair Fight, the New Georgia Project — had been registering voters. Hundreds of thousands of them. In church parking lots, on college campuses, in barbershops and community centers. When 2020 came, those voters showed up. Then came the January 2021 Senate runoffs — and Georgia flipped both seats, delivering a Democratic majority.

Abrams didn't do it alone. She built on decades of Southern organizing that too many people had ignored.

Stop Cop City: The New Resistance Front

In 2023, the city announced plans to build a $90 million police training facility on 85 acres of one of Atlanta's most important urban forests. Everyone called it Cop City. And Atlanta's activists did what Atlanta activists have always done: they organized.

The movement brought together environmental justice organizers, Black Lives Matter activists, Indigenous land defenders, students, and community members. The state responded with criminalization — charging dozens of activists under RICO statutes. Then, in December 2025, a Georgia judge dismissed 61 charges. The movement had held.

"Atlanta is not just participating in the resistance. Atlanta is the resistance. And always has been."

No Kings in Georgia: 50+ Rallies and Counting

When the No Kings movement launched nationwide, Georgia didn't just participate — Georgia led. The March 28, 2026 mobilization saw over 50 No Kings events across Georgia alone. From Atlanta to Savannah to Augusta to small towns that don't make national headlines.

This is what resistance looks like in the South. Not one rally in a blue city. Organizing everywhere — including places where being visible carries real risk.

Why Apparel With Purpose ATL Was Built Here

We didn't pick Atlanta because it was convenient. We built this brand here because Atlanta understands something other cities are still learning: democracy requires visibility. It requires showing up. It requires building movements that outlast any one election cycle.

When you put on a No Kings shirt in Georgia, you're not just making a fashion choice. You're participating in a 70-year tradition of people who refused to look away, refused to stay silent, and refused to let anyone tell them their voice didn't count.

Atlanta has continuity. A throughline of organizing and resistance that stretches across generations, across movements, across issues — always building, always refusing to quit.

We are proud to be here. We are proud to be part of this legacy. And we will never stop wearing what we believe.
